The Importance of Nutrition

In our busy, working lives, nutrition is often overlooked, yet it is an essential component of human performance. Nutrition underpins our mental and physical health and needs to take priority when meeting the demands of a busy lifestyle.

In my article for Dentistry Scotland, I talk about how choosing a balanced, nutrient rich diet provides adequate energy reserves whilst supplying our bodies with the essential vitamins and minerals to support muscle and brain function. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Including protein can help regulate mood and relieve stress.
  2. Oily fish – think SMASH (sardines, mackerel, anchovies, salmon, herring) – are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help regulate inflammation in the body and improve brain plasticity.
  3. Colourful fruit and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, helping to combat oxidative stress on our bodies.
  4. Nuts are rich in healthy fats, provide a source of protein as well as fibre and several essential vitamins and minerals.
  5. Choosing wholegrain options improves fibre intake, supporting gut health and managing blood sugar levels.

It is important to remember that a healthy, balanced diet impacts oral health as well as overall health. Nutrition is one of the foundations of oral health. Fifty percent of mouth cancers are associated with a diet low in fresh fruit and vegetables. The abundance of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals are protective against malignant change. In contrast, highly processed foods, high in refined carbohydrates, are pro-inflammatory and associated with a higher risk of periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease is linked to increased risk of systemic diseases, with a threefold increase in risk of diabetes and being causal in the development of cardiovascular disease.

It’s time to make positive changes through prioritising nutrition.
